Filled with flashy dresses and music that fully embraced the rich, unique history of the various ethnic groups at Salisbury University, this year’s Culture Shock Fashion Show, held on Oct. 23 in GSU’s Wicomico Room, captivated the audience with dances that exemplified the elegance each culture at SU has to offer.
The Fashion Show featured a runway that highlighted the students’ natural beauty, accompanied by lively speakers and a vibrant display of colorful lights illuminating the models.
Participants were encouraged to “Walk the Walk” and “Talk the Talk,” with audience members and walk the runway at various points during the event.
Jahnaiya Sutherland, a SU junior majoring in Data Science, attended the fashion show, describing the events and students as both incredible and magnificent.
“I thought it was absolutely incredible, I love seeing the vanity models [and] the culture here on campus,” she said. “It was truly magnificent to see South Asian students and different cultures, we saw some Latin American students representing their culture with flags and such too.
“It was really really cool to see the Jewish organization represented really well, seeing all that was truly fun, it had a fun little interjection, that toothbrushing thing… it was all really funny”
Sutherland also enjoyed the contagious high-energy crowd that filled the room on the 23rd.
“The crowd was a really high spirited event, you could tell that they [were] really cool, I really liked that,” Sutherland said. “It was really encouraging.”
David, a SU student majoring in Computer Science, performed in the fashion show for the first time. He spoke about how the event promotes community and self-expression.
“This was my first year, yeah for sure it’s fun, I get to meet people,” he said. “Because I am a social person, it’s a good way connecting with people.
“I met a lot of cool people especially today, the way people are dressing, and you can see my outfit, I’ve seen people that [were] dressed up really good today, so it was a real fun time to see people.”
David expressed how the Black community made him feel and the powerful effect it has on his life.
“The Black community, it’s like a small community but it makes us really strong, easier to show love and support, I wouldn’t be able to do this without my family and friends.”
The Culture Shock Fashion Show was “shocking.” What’s not to love? They can’t wait to meet you next year!
